A brief summary of the rules on which I based the above record, and the reasoning behind the decisions as to access and subject
headings, follows:
010 – I wasn’t sure whether a catalog card number and LCCN were the same thing, but decided, since I couldn’t
find that specific information, that this was the simplest solution. I considered using the 024 field, but it isn’t
common, so I went with 010.
260 – 1.4C5, 1.4F5
300 - 2.5B2, 2.5C5
500 / 504 – I would normally put these together as one (504), but because they were mentioned specifically as separate
author and subject indexes, it seemed better to list them separately.
610 – 651 – In choosing the subject headings, I searched CONSULS and found items under both HV and NA headings.
Because this work was published before the bombing of the trade center, and its focus is the history of the WTC to that point,
I decided it would be better placed with the NA materials. The F128 – history headings – just didn’t seem
as good a fit, and I thought might be more difficult for patrons to locate this item. The architectural, ‘city planning’
aspect seemed the main focus; since we don’t have access to LC classification schedules, I went with what seemed the
best fit with the materials on the SCSU shelves. The subject headings I gleaned from several sources; keeping in mind that
the patron searching might use different terms, I tried to include a number of sensible headings for access.
700 – The names of the compilers were prominently displayed on the title page, so I felt added entries for them were
appropriate. Normally the “introduction by” name might not warrant an entry, but because of Mayor Koch’s
prominence, and the fact that a searcher might associate his name with the history of WTC, I included this as another point
of access.
